Listen to Artefakt:
Artefakt is a collaboration of two young Dutch producers Robin Koek and Nick Lapien that share a love for melancholic, hypnotic voodoo music. They found a home at Field Records, a Dutch experimental techno label, releasing their first two statements ‘Mirror Society’ and ‘The Other Sun’…
Surfacing with amongst others Steffi, Delta Funktionen and Area Forty One. ‘Mirror Society’ received praise from major players like Vince Watson, Eric Clouter and Laurent Garnier.
Subtle construction, complex layering with a focus on texture and form, built on an efficient drive entrancing the dance floor, those are the distinguishing key elements that mark their compositions. Tracks that will cast a spell and you and disconnect you from time and space.
The duo treats techno as an artform rather than a musical genre exploring a scope that surpasses functional dancefloor-tools and bangers. Combining high art and underground culture stemming from the uncompromising squatting scene whilst practicing musique concrete tape and cello based improvisations in locations like Trouw and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam as part of the ‘Contemporary Dialogue’ project. This merging of worlds manifests in a versatile nature that is audible in the narrative selection of tracks in dj-sets and podcasts by the young duo. Both members are engaged in numerous project besides Artefakt. Koek works as a free-lance composer and sound designer while also exploring different speeds and mentalities under his recent moniker ’Syne-F’. Syne-F released digital on Field Records and prepares a first full EP currently.
Nick Lapien is releasing his personal music under several aliases such as Lapien and Metropolis. Early 2012 the first Lapien EP came out on London based imprint Bliq, which contained remixes by the likes of Conforce and Fred P. Several releases are planned for 2013.
Around the same time in 2012, the first Metropolis EP: ‘Guardian of the Hearmachine’ was released on Other Heights. The EP got great support, being recommended by Berlin vinyl-heavyweight Hardwax, charted by Milton Bradley and called out as one of the best records of the year by the New York based store Dopejams. A follow-up EP is being pressed as we speak and will surface on New York based imprint Sequencias.
Joining these perspectives in a meticulous, semi-analog working method, the two bring a balanced and hypnotizing sound to the club. What sets Artefakt apart from other techno acts, is the informed view on electronic music and the combination of musical material, atmosphere and groove, that will never bore or disappoint you, whether you are listening quietly on headphones, or you hear the music pounding from a 10 foot tall PA at a rave.
